A Certified Safety Officer (CPO) is a qualifying title awarded by the Council of American Certified Safety Professionals to individuals who have passed specified examinations (in 2 disciplines) and possess the appropriate level of professional training in the technical, administrative, or legal aspects of workplace safety-related activities.
The timeframe for obtaining the Data Protection Specialist certificate depends on the course format and pace of learning.
To earn CPO certification, candidates must complete rigorous training covering various aspects of safety management. Emphasis during training is placed on key areas such as:
- Surveillance and monitoring
- Risk assessment and threat analysis

- Ethical and legal responsibilities of security personnel

To comply with the certificate, the following requirements must be met:
- Must be at least 21 years of age
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Understanding of FEMA’s incident management systems
- Currently holds or has held the rank of sergeant or higher, or 3 years of service in criminal justice, security, or similar position, combined with 16 hours of college or course work, and certifications related to management, leadership, and leadership from other sources
- Completion of national security courses 2 with industry-recognized certifications
